Tucked away in a quiet Highlands neighborhood, behind an old iron gate, lies the urban oasis known as Lakeside Swim Club. Described by Sports Illustrated as “nearly three acres of fertile frolicking territory … in an old limestone quarry that’s nestled among an eclectic collection of houses, ivy-covered 40-foot cliff walls and towering redbud and sugar maple trees.” This idyllic recreational facility was carved out of a limestone quarry in 1924 after miners accidentally struck a spring and flooded the area. Lakeside has been a place for Louisvillians to gather in joy, community and recreation ever since.
From the infants in the enclosed baby pool to the seniors in the water-walking lane, Lakeside offers something for everyone: three areas for lap swimming, including 10 50-meter lanes; a nationally elite club team (the SeaHawks), a less intense feeder program (the Quarry Gators) and a masters team for all adult ages; water volleyball and water basketball (plus two dryland hoops courts that can also convert to volleyball); a diving area with low and high boards; a raft-only channel for lazy-day floating; a “bullpen” for roughhousing; a workout room overlooking the expanse; picnic tables and grills; a yoga room; aerobics and tai-chi classes; and a sauna. There are Sunday concerts, “dive-in” movie nights and a dog-swimming day after the last day the pool is open for the season. While summer is the main attraction, the facility is open nearly year-round - offering an enclosed pool and the fully-equipped fitness center during the “off season” between the annual draining and filling of the “lake”.
Demand for membership at Lakeside is high. Less than 175 new memberships are offered each year and they are only obtained through sponsorship. This raffle is for a Lakeside sponsorship, allowing the winner to join as an Associate Member of the club as of May 2025. Proceeds directly support The Waldorf School of Louisville. All dues plus the initiation fee that accompany membership must be paid by the winner. Only 100 tickets will be sold.
The winner will be contacted by the Lakeside Swim Club sponsor and a new member orientation meeting will be set for a date in February, March or April 2025. The initiation fee and membership dues are to be paid to Lakeside Swim Club during this meeting. The membership is continuous as long as the membership is paid each year and the members are in good standing with Lakeside Swim Club.
